Getting Ready for the 2008 Rideau River Cleanup

2008 RIDEAU RIVER CLEANUP

Sunday, May 11, 2008, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. RAIN OR SHINE.

Meet up locations include:

The Field House at 193 Stanley Ave.
The Rideau Tennis Club at 1 Donald St.
The Ottawa Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club (next to Brewer Park) at 176 Cameron Ave.

Dress for mucky conditions and bring work gloves if you have them but cleanup supplies will be provided.

Be very careful when on the riverbank. Watch your footing and what you pick up off the ground.

Urban Rideau Conservationists is a non-profit, volunteer action group that organizes Mother’s Day Rideau River Cleanups. The Rideau River is an essential and much appreciated part of the Ottawa landscape and community.

Come out and join us for the cleanup and the event afterwards!

It occured to us one day, the Rideau needed cleaning right way, so the City of Ottawa came along and gave us some money for our song, so now the Green Party is humming away! Of Course there is the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, with it's very wonderful canoe majority, along with NECA's love, and some good weather from above, the Rideau will shine on Mother's Day! Before this poesy completely ends, lets say thanks two good friends, the OTLBC and of course the RTC, for lending us their great diggeries. (Diggeries is a word that means 'physical space'.I think this is a good word, but of course I would think that because I had to make it up).

Glebe seeks allies in fight to outlaw pesticide use! Take action Ottawa!

A residents' declaration that the Glebe should be pesticide-free is intended to motivate other neighbourhoods to press Ottawa City Council to ban the cosmetic use of the chemicals, according to the president of the Glebe Community Association. "Our resolution is symbolic because we can't force people to do anything," Robert Brocklebank said. "All we can do is educate and encourage (other communities), and we hope our action does." Mr. Brocklebank said the Glebe Community Association's environment committee will make a presentation about the resolution, which was passed Tuesday, to other community associations at a meeting May 23. Virginia Carver, chairwoman of the environment committee, said the symbolic gesture reflects the frustration that Ottawa is not among the more than 125 municipalities in Canada with a pesticide ban in place. "I hope it will send a message." Chuck Hillock, owner of Home Hardware in the Glebe, said his store does sell pesticides and there is a demand for them from his Glebe and Old Ottawa South customers. But, he said, the store does carry eco-friendly alternatives. "We have both of the products, but we can't push anything on a customer," Mr. Hillock said. If a city-wide ban on cosmetic pesticide use was put in place, though, his business wouldn't suffer, as he is prepared to fill in the pesticide void with green alternatives, Mr. Hillock said. Council voted on and turned down a city-wide cosmetic pesticide ban in 2002 and 2005. Bay Ward councillor Alex Cullen said last month that he plans to bring the debate back before council as early as this fall. by Samantha Ramage
